Captain's Bring in their year with a bang!

Our Men's Ladies' and Seniors' Captains kicked off their Captains' year with a great drive-in on Saturday 3rd February! With lots of support and a full compliment for the Texas Scramble competition, Bruce Carter, Sarah Leonard and Ron Wicks enjoyed a lovely day, despite the weather trying to dampen spirits!

Good luck to each of the Captains and we wish you all the best for your upcoming year!

Captain's Drive In

Enter your team into the Spring Open Am-Am - Raising funds for Course Furniture!

The Spring Am-Am has now been re-arranged for 21st April due to extreme weather conditions. All tee times have been rolled over to that date.

Our first open event of the year is already around the corner; the Spring Open Am-Am. This competition is open to all golfers from any club as long as they have a valid handicap, and entry costs just £80 per team.

As always with our first open of the year, money raised will be put towards some furniture for the golf course. We have not made the decision on what we would like for the course yet but to give you an idea of what to expect, last year we bought some hand-made wooden bins, and in 2016 we bought some recycled plastic benches.

We still provide great prizes for this Am-Am, despite the fact that a good portion of the money is raised for the furniture, so we expect a nice amount of teams to take part as usual.

We appreciate every team that enters this event as it helps us improve the course for the people who play it. If you fancy a great day out for just £20 a person why not give us a call on 01964 670112 and book your team in? Times are available from 8am to 1pm.

Christmas Open Am-Am postponed until Saturday 18th November

All the teams will remain in their original tee time slot unless we are told otherwise, so please let us know if you cannot make the rearranged date.

Let's hope for better weather the second time around and we'll see you on the first tee!

New Men's Standard Scratch Score

Today we received official confirmation from England Golf and the USGA that our Men's Standard Scratch Scores have been updated, after we have made changes to the length of the course including adding around 150 yards of length and also bringing trees into play and changing some holes slightly.

We are delighted to say that we have achieved our target SSS which was to put +1 shot on each the whites and the yellow tees, which are now 70 and 68 respectively! These are effective from last week's competitions and will be showed on the results.

What does this mean?

Basically, what should happen now is that everyone's handicaps reduce over time by approximately one shot (or just under). As an example, if you were to shoot a score of 85 off the white tees, on the previous scratch score (69) would have meant that you effectively played to a 16 handicap. If you now shoot the same score, you will be effectively playing to a 15 handicap.

This is especially good news for those looking to try and get in a lower division, get to single figures, or just hit their target handicap.

Burstwick Enjoys Most Successful Pro-Am to Date!

Nearly 100 people visited Burstwick on Friday 27th May to take part in our Annual Pro-Am sponsored by Santander, and it was a fantastic day with some great scoring!

The weather gods blessed us with hardly any wind at all and warm conditions which got better as the day wore on, the sun visited from 3pm onwards and into the evening which made for a very pleasant round for the later teams.

On the day we had tee sponsors on most holes and a half-way house sponsor which all contributed to a fantastic prize fund of £2800 for the professionals and £2000 worth in amateur prizes, making the Burstwick Pro-Am one of the best value events in the area.

Teams on the day came from all over Yorkshire and the course was looking the best it has ever been for the event. With scoreable conditions the day looked perfect for some low shooting from the professionals, and Alex Belt's course record of six under could have been seriously under threat.

The Yorkshire PGA greeted players as they registered for the competition, handing out pin placement cards and giving everyone information about how the course was playing, and free refreshments were on the tee ready for the players going on their journey. The half-way house which was sponsored by Premier Stores give players a chance to refuel on various savoury and sweet snacks, preparing for attack on the easier back nine.

When the scores started rolling in it was clearly visible that the added length on the course and inclusion of trees into play have made the course more difficult in the two years since the last Pro-Am, as the winning professional score was the highest it as ever been at 1-under par.

The winning team with a fantastic score of 18 under par was A. Belt (Pro), C. Clarkson, P. Kaye and S. Mews, taking the victory with a one shot lead! A whopping five professionals tied for the top spot with scores of 69 each which shoes just how close-run the event was! Other winners included:

  • Straightest Drive (Hole 2) - L. Webster
  • Nearest Pin (Hole 5) - P. McDermott
  • Nearest Pin (Hole 14) - A. Mackinnon
  • Nearest Pin (Hole 17) - P. Daley
  • Putting Champion - P. Daley

Congratulations to all that won prizes at the event, and thanks again for all the kind compliments about the course and supporting the club. See you all next year!

The Committee Votes Are In

The Committee Ballot ended on 31st March and the votes have been counted. It was another close battle with the leader emerging as Darren Marks, winning by one vote from his nearest competitor Gary Spears.

We would like to congratulate Darren Marks on his new position on the committee for a period of two years, and thank all of the candidates for their efforts and dedication to the club.

New Drop Zones for Holes 6 and 11

We have created two new drops zones to the back-right of greens 6 and 11, and these are for people who have found their ball lying in the trees behind the green and are seeking to declare the ball unplayable with a penalty of one shot.

Because of the boundary fence it is mostly impossible to take relief when declaring unplayable and therefore can mean a near impossible shot, by using the dropping zones you are still dropping a penalty shot, but you have a chance of making a good chip. The rule is as follows:

Dropping Zone

Applies to holes 6 and 11

If a ball is found and lies in the copse of Willow trees behind the 6th and 11th greens, the player may:

(i) Play the ball as it lies; or

(ii) As an additional option, declare the ball unplayable and under penalty of one stroke, drop a ball in either of the dropping zones.

PENALTY FOR BREACH OF LOCAL RULE:

Match play – Loss of hole; Stroke play – Two strokes.
