Rob Draper wins the 2019 Club Championship!

Last weekend we held our Club Championship which is a two round strokeplay event which determines arguably the best golfer at the club.

Two trophies are up for grabs on the weekend: the Club Championship Trophy which goes to the player with the lowest aggregate gross score, and the Ted Key Trophy which goes to the player with the best accumulative net score.

We made a slight change to the format this year in that we told all the entrants that the top 16 gross scores from the first round would be seeded into selected fourballs on the Sunday morning so that the leaders were all playing together.

As it was the first time we had ever put this seeded tee format into play, we were a little apprehensive how it would be received by the entrants, so you can imagine our delight when every player in the top 16 embraced and priased the idea.

On the Saturday (first round) scoring was disappointing from most players apart from Lee Webster who posted a solid 71 gross to lead by four shots from Mike Taylor and James Sprangle. Other notable players had higher scores such as Steve Sorrenson on 76, Rob Draper on 76 and Chris Young on 78 - all of these players were disappointed with their efforts.

Going into day two and it was arguably Lee’s championship to lose, but as we all know in golf it’s not over until the last putt drops.

Rob Draper was in the penultimate fourball and was playing very solid golf on what was a reasonably tough day on the golf course with the wind blowing around 15-20mph. Meanwhile Webster was having a wobble on the first nine holes with a string of bogeys to post a +6 score of 41. It was all to play for!

As the first fourballs of the top sixteen came in they all stayed around the 18th green to see how the Championship reached its climax - and it didn’t disappoint! Draper parred the last hole for 71, which meant that Lee needed a level gross back 9 to take it to a play-off.

Unfortunately for Lee, a bogey on the par-3 17th hole cost him, and he missed a 25 foot birdie putt on 18, meaning that Rob was crowned the 2019 Club Champion after overturning a four shot defecit! The Ted Key Trophy went to Shaun McGeachy who scored a fantastic net total of 6-under par.

Congratulations Rob, although we won’t hear the end of it! And well done to Shaun who showed fantastic consistency throughout the weekend for the net prize!

As part of your membership you are now insured with England Golf and Bluefin Sport!

As part of being a member at Burstwick Country Golf, golfers are now entitled to free personal liability insurance to cover them in the event of an accident on the golf course.

England Golf have teamed up with Bluefin Sport to provide every member of a golf club that is affiliated to the National Union with public liability insurance up to £10m while on the golf course. As a member of Burstwick this automatically came into effect on July 1, 2019, and you do not need to do anything. In the event of a claim you would need to register at www.englandgolf.org/my-account so that Bluefin Sport can validate your claim.

Bluefin Golf Insurance

So what's covered?

Basically the cover is for personal injury claims, so for example if you hit someone with a golf ball then Bluefin will cover you for the incident, however this only applies in the UK, Channel Islands or Isle of Man. You are also covered for abroad golfing if you have adequate travel insurance but terms and conditions do apply for this.

Are my clubs covered if they are stolen? Or am I covered for my bar bill if I get a hole in one?

The answer is no, this cover is intended for liability only, and does not include the extras that can be found in other packages with an annual fee. This insurance is purely to protect you on the golf course in the event of an unfortunate accident.

Benefits of being a member at Burstwick

As part of being a member at Burstwick this new benefit from England Golf is automatically included, as well as many other benefits at the club such as discount on food, drink, driving range and more. We are also part of a 15-strong reciprocal group of clubs which offer discounted golf for our members (from £10 per round at each club), as well as unlimited golf, having an official handicap and much more. If you woud like to know more about joining then visit www.burstwick.golf/golf-membership or call us on 01964 670112 and we will be happy to help!

A great weekend in the sun at Scarborough

Last weekend our Men’s Captain Tony Howard hosted his Captain’s weekend away in the sunny isle of Scarborough!

On Saturday Tony had organised the 32-strong party to play at Scarborough North Cliff which is in fantastic condition, and the weather was absolutely perfect with sunshine throughout the day. On the day Tony organised a “Blind Betterball” where pairs were picked at random after the round had been completed. Tony Peroni and Matt Gilgeous took the top prize in this event with a fantastic score of 42 points.

This round was followed by a meal at the club and then we headed to our hotel in the centre of Scarborough to check in before we headed out for a small quantity of refreshments and of course an early night! The tee time for the second day wasn’t until 1pm so the lads didn’t have to be up too early which was music to Alan’s ears in particular, having contracted some kind of headache!

The second round was at Scarborough South Cliff and the format was a Waltz. The winning score of 18-under par was achieved by Past Captain Alan Mackinnon, Lee Jackson, Tony Sims and Jamie Gill, cracking scoring on the day!

A special thanks was given to the injured Past Captain Andy Wilson who provided the “beer buggy” on both days, although the amount of willing people accepting the beers was significantly less on the second day!

Many thanks to Tony for organising a fantastic weekend by the sea, and well done to all the winners!

Who will win 1,000 Range Balls in our June Members' FREE Monthly Prize Draw?

To thank our awesome members for their loyalty, we have introduced a Monthly Members’ Prize Draw in which we’ll pick one member at random each month for a chosen prize, it’s that simple!

Andy Coult won last month’s prize which was a Steak Night for two!

Who will win the June prize? Up for grabs we have a card for 1,000 balls on the driving range, good luck everyone!

Spring Am-Am pays for New Hole Cutter for Greenkeepers

Many of our members may have been wondering what the money from the Spring Open Am-Am fundraiser went towards, as we haven’t made any announcements yet.

The reason is we have been passing some ideas around the Competition Committee with regards to how best spend the money and get the most benefits on the golf course. In the past we have spent the money on bins, benches, ball washers and bunker rakes, but we agreed at the last meeting that nothing in regards to course furniture really jumps out as needing renewing at the moment, and that priorities lie elsewhere.

With that in mind a suggestion was made about a new hole cutter for the greenkeepers, since the main issue we have on the golf course right now with the bunkers and greens having vastly improved is that we are having inconsistencies with the old holes when we are changing pin placements.

This week we had a demonstration of a top of the range piece of equipment called the iPro by BMS, which is used by the best courses on tour, but is at the same time very expensive at around £1,000.

That’s why the committee voted in favour of putting the £720 raised from the Spring Am-Am towards this new hole cutter, and that members will see the instant benefit which will keep the holes consistent for years to come.

Zebra Finance have cease all new lending

It came to our attention on Thursday of last week that Zebra Finance Ltd have ceased all lending for new or renewing clients. This is due to their funding bank R. Raphael & Sons PLC having their banking licence revoked from the Bank of England and are therefore being wound up.

Zebra Finance

This has significant affects in the short term as the club have been using Zebra Finance as our preferred lender for membership subscription direct debits, but we hope to have a new company to replace Zebra as soon as possible.

What does this mean for me?

If you applied for your membership finance before 15th March you shouldn’t have been impacted by this, as Zebra have told us that it only affected applications from this point, and that previous applications had already had their funding allocated.

Zebra have also told us that they have been in touch with every applicant that has been affected, so members should know their individual situation.

What happens next?

In the short term, we are continuing to honour all membership rights to all members who have attempted to renew with Zebra, and as soon as we have confirmation of a new funding company we will inform everyone affected and have them apply with the new company.

We apologise for any inconvenience caused by this situation, but we were kept completely in the dark on the matter by Zebra Finance and had no warning of anything happening of this nature, and we fully appreciate everyone’s patience while we get another finance company on board.

Competition Committee Volunteer Required

Your Club Needs You.jpg

We are looking for a new member to join the Competition and Handicap Committee on a two year term as our Volunteer Coordinator.

If you would like to nominate someone please fill in a nomination slip in the clubhouse and put it into the ballot box on the bar. On 18th March the nominations will be gathered and a members vote will commence.

Get into golf with our Taster Memberships

It's the time of year again when we will be putting on a recruitment drive in order to attract new people to the golf and to the club. Our Taster Memberships have been very successful in the past and our new Head Professional Matt Daley is very keen to get started with the 2019 packages.

Aimed at golf novices and beginners, our taster memberships are a perfect way to get a feel for golf, with a block of group lessons from Matt Daley, 800 driving range balls and two months’ of golf. It’s a crash course in golf!

After the three month course has finished each person will have a good understanding of golf and will have improved by a good margin. We can almost guarantee too that they will want to continue further and play as much golf as they can!

The course of lessons will involve a general understanding of the rules and etiquette of the game and then Matt will move on to the golf swing, short game, and putting. All the while keeping fun and laughs as the main priority!

As part of the lessons and the range work, Taster members will not be required to have their own equipment or even have any golf apparel, they can just turn up in whatever they feel comfortable in and be ready to enjoy themselves and meet new people!

If you’ve been looking for a new hobby, or if you’ve always fancied a crack at golf but never got round to it, now is the perfect time to start with our Taster Memberships! Pop into our clubhouse or download an application form to apply now!

Record numbers for Captain’s Drive-In

Captains Drive In - (left to right) Seniors’ Captain Steve Alger, Men’s Captain Tony Howard, Ladies’ Captain Sarah Leonard, Men’s Vice-Captain Dave Smith

ON Saturday we hosted our Captain’s Drive-In Texas Scramble, after it was re-arranged due to snowfall on 2nd February. For those who don’t know, the Captain’s Drive-In is the official event where the previous Captains hand over to the incoming Captains for the year, and it’s always a great event.

Around 25 spectators gather at the first tee at 7:30am on the morning to watch Our Men’s Captain Tony Howard, Ladies’ Captain Sarah Leonard, Seniors’ Captain Steve Alger and Men’s Vice Captain Dave Smith tee off on for their first official round of golf in their new roles.

Fittingly, the Captains all had walk in music to the tee and I was the MC introducing them, and in true Burstwick fashion obviously tell a few jokes and giving some banter along the way.

Our Professional Matt Daley had his Trackman launch monitor on the first tee so that the Captains could see shot data from what was rather a nerve-racking first tee shot in front of an audience, having just walked on to their chosen song!

The competition, which was a Texas Scramble, attracted record numbers for the club as 109 players entered the event, a fantastic number for a club competition in winter! It was great to see such huge support for the incoming Captains.

Afterwards members enjoyed a nice home-made stew and yorkshire pudding in the clubhouse and Tony was handed his Captain’s blazer, and told the club what his plans were for the year, as well as explaining about his nominated charity: Hull for Heroes.

On behalf of the Captains, a huge thank you goes out to all the support from the members, and here’s to a successful 2019!

Thank you to the members from Matt Daley

It’s been nearly three months since I joined the team at Burstwick, and it has flown by!

I just wanted to take this opportunity to say thank you to all the members at the club who have made me feel very welcome, and already part of the family at Burstwick.

The reception I have received since October has been humbling and I know that I haven’t quite met everyone yet, but I’m sure I will get to know you all at some point soon, it’s just that I have been putting every ounce of effort into the studio to make sure it was completed as soon as possible.

Many of you will be aware that when I joined the club my aim was to create the best teaching facility in the whole of the East Riding area, with the best technology, knowledge and expertise, and I see this as a fantastic facility for the members of Burstwick, whether it be for lessons or for hiring with friends to play on the virtual golf simulator.

The studio is now complete and I would love all of the members to come and have a look so if you see me in the clubhouse don’t hesitate to grab me and I will gladly show you around.

Also I would just like to say a big thank you to Alan and family for their support and patience throughout, you have all made me feel so welcome and have been a massive help in my start at the club.

So a huge thank you to all members, staff and family of Burstwick Country Golf. It means a lot!

Regards
Matt Daley

NEW RULES from 1st January 2019 - Everything you need to know

The new Rules of Golf from the R&A and USGA come into force from 1st January 2019 and it is important that golfers know about the changes if they are going to be playing competitively.

This helpful video below gives you a fantastic overview of the 20 biggest changes in the rules, which will be the most commonly occurring in your game. Make sure you give this video a watch before the 1st of January if you are unsure of any of the new rules.

Rules not being adopted by Burstwick

Some of the new rules include the options for local rules to be enforced by the Committee at each club, and currently the Committee has no plans to enforce any of these, this includes and alternative penalty procedure for an out of bounds or lost ball; we will remain with the traditional method of going back to where the shot was last played from under a one stroke penalty.

If you have any questions on the new rules please don’t hesitate to speak to either Alan or Matt at the club for any help or clarification.
