Alex Belt sets new Course Record at Burstwick in The Audio Room Pro-Am

Last Friday saw our most high profile event of the year held at Burstwick, the annual Pro-Am sponsored by The Audio Room.

For those who are unfamiliar with the format of a Pro-Am, teams enter the competition which consist of one PGA Professional and three amateur golfers. The four play as a team in Am-Am format (best two scores from four on each hole) while the Pro also has their own individual score marked for a separate leaderboard.

Our Pro-Am is one of the best value events in the area, with a total prize value of over £5,000 split between professionals and amateurs, while entry is just £195 per team. Not only is the prize table worth a huge amount, but we put on a great day for all guests with a free halfway house which includes a boat load of food, soft drinks and beers, we also throw in four nearest pin prizes as well as a straightest drive. As we pride ourselves as a restaurant that produces high quality food, the included two course meal of chicken with white wine sauce followed by a home-made cheesecake went down very well too!

Now on to the scores. Last year just one under par won the top professional prize, but Alex Belt was having none of that in 2017. As a past winner on the EuroPro Tour, I know that Alex has a huge talent worthy of reducing any golf course to it’s knees, and as such he has held the professional course record at Burstwick since 2008 when he shot 64 (six under par).

This year he decided that 64 wasn’t good enough and beat that score by another two shots! 62 was enough to take the top spot by an amazing five shots. Astonishing.

Burstwick’s very own Joe Coyle followed behind with a very solid 67, alongside Cottingham’s Alex Boyton, to take joint second place, a great performance from Joe who definitely has much more left in the tank.

Leading the teams was Alex’s team “Belt’s Boys”, followed by Cobie Atkin’s team from Hainsworth Park, and in third, fourth and fifth positions were teams from Burstwick, with professionals James Drinkall, Rob Caldebank and Danny Wilkes respectively.

A huge thank you goes out from myself to Darren Bamford of The Audio Room (pictured above with Aran Wainwright of the YPGA and winner Alex Belt), and all of the sponsors who helped make the day possible. Not forgetting my volunteer for the halfway house Paul Collins, and all of the 25 teams who supported the event!

Driving Range Tips from The Pro

Technical Practice vs Target Practice

Technical Practice

If you have been for a lesson with myself or a fellow PGA Professional, this would involve doing drills you may have been given or hitting balls with a visual aid, whether it be for strike, club path, or club face alignment for example. Or just a feeling of what you are trying to accomplish to improve your golf.

During this phase of practise you are solely focusing on the movement you are trying to make. However I would pick out some sort of target as a reference.

Target Practice

  • This is where I would like you to forget all your technical thoughts, and pick out specific targets on the range.
  • Use different clubs to different targets. Pick out a fairway, or a green, then go through your routine and hit the shot. Now you are practising how you play, rather than just beating balls with no real target.
  • If a tee shot doesn’t suit your eye, (our 16th for example), pick a line on the range as the O.O.B. then a fairway to the left and practise that tee shot.
  • Play a hole, pick out a fairway and hit driver, then pick another target as your green and hit 6 iron for example. You very rarely hit the same two clubs in a row on the golf course.

Golf is a target orientated game, so start practising hitting shots to targets and I’m sure it will help your game when your out on the golf course.

Burstwick Enjoys Most Successful Pro-Am to Date!

Nearly 100 people visited Burstwick on Friday 27th May to take part in our Annual Pro-Am sponsored by Santander, and it was a fantastic day with some great scoring!

The weather gods blessed us with hardly any wind at all and warm conditions which got better as the day wore on, the sun visited from 3pm onwards and into the evening which made for a very pleasant round for the later teams.

On the day we had tee sponsors on most holes and a half-way house sponsor which all contributed to a fantastic prize fund of £2800 for the professionals and £2000 worth in amateur prizes, making the Burstwick Pro-Am one of the best value events in the area.

Teams on the day came from all over Yorkshire and the course was looking the best it has ever been for the event. With scoreable conditions the day looked perfect for some low shooting from the professionals, and Alex Belt's course record of six under could have been seriously under threat.

The Yorkshire PGA greeted players as they registered for the competition, handing out pin placement cards and giving everyone information about how the course was playing, and free refreshments were on the tee ready for the players going on their journey. The half-way house which was sponsored by Premier Stores give players a chance to refuel on various savoury and sweet snacks, preparing for attack on the easier back nine.

When the scores started rolling in it was clearly visible that the added length on the course and inclusion of trees into play have made the course more difficult in the two years since the last Pro-Am, as the winning professional score was the highest it as ever been at 1-under par.

The winning team with a fantastic score of 18 under par was A. Belt (Pro), C. Clarkson, P. Kaye and S. Mews, taking the victory with a one shot lead! A whopping five professionals tied for the top spot with scores of 69 each which shoes just how close-run the event was! Other winners included:

  • Straightest Drive (Hole 2) - L. Webster
  • Nearest Pin (Hole 5) - P. McDermott
  • Nearest Pin (Hole 14) - A. Mackinnon
  • Nearest Pin (Hole 17) - P. Daley
  • Putting Champion - P. Daley

Congratulations to all that won prizes at the event, and thanks again for all the kind compliments about the course and supporting the club. See you all next year!

Over £2,000 Raised for Joe Coyle's Season!

As many will know, Saturday’s golf day and night do was all in aid of raising funds for Joe Coyle, to pay for his season on the Europro Tour.

As Joe earned a full card for the Europro Tour, it will cost around £10,000-12,000 to play all of these events, and as the prize fund matrix on the Europro Tour is heavily weighted to the top end, Joe needs to plan to cover at least 75 per cent of these costs beforehand.

On Saturday Joe hosted a fundraising Am-Am and evening event at Burstwick and managed to raise more than £2,000 for his season, which paired with some recently acquired sponsors means he is well over halfway to achieving his goal.

Joe has expressed that he would like to thank all that supported him on Saturday as without this support he could not go and pursue his dream. Joe can now get back playing some golf and hopefully making himself a successful career!

Joe Coyle earns full card for 2016 Europro Tour

Frilford Heath, Oxfordshire, was the venue for the final stage of Europro Tour qualifying last week, where 240 professional golfers were looking to obtain their Europro Tour card for the season.

Qualification for the Europro Tour is based on how high you finish at the final, with the top 30 and ties gaining a 'full' card, and the further down you place the fewer events you are eligible to enter for. For those who aren't aware, a full card means that you are able to enter all of the season's events.

Joe did very well the previous week at the first stage of qualifying (at Mottram Hall) and took this with him to Frilford as a springboard for confidence. On the first day this showed, when he shot two under par, lying in tied fifth - a fantastic position to be in.

On day two conditions were a little more difficult and the nerves of making the cut (top 80 or so players) were starting to show.

Joe was five over gross after six holes, after making a triple bogey on the par 5 sixth. This could have spelled disaster for Joe's qualification chances but he valiantly regained focus and fought back, making a birdie and 11 pars to shoot a total of +4 for the day, tied for 36th and making the cut comfortably.

On the third and final day Joe felt that he could play a bit more aggressive having made the cut already, and went out to shoot a fantastic 3 under par round for a 54 hole total of -1! This placed tied for 19th, earning him a full card for the season, exempt for all the Europro events; needless to say Joe was absolutely delighted with this.

Earning a full card for the tour is a fantastic achievement for Joe and his team, and we cannot wait to see what the season brings.

Well done Joe!
