Burstwick win the 2017 East Riding Junior Final at Ganton!

On Tuesday 29th August we visited Ganton Golf Club, near Scarborough, to watch our Junior Team compete in the East Riding Union Junior League Final for 2017. The event consisted of three players from the finalist clubs, Burstwick, Hornsea and Scarborough North Cliff, and the format was an aggregate 18-hole stableford competition.

Burstwick looked the strongest team on paper with Jack Maxey (2 hcap), Lewis Hunt (4 hcap) and Alfie Tidder (9 hcap) representing the club, but as it was a handicapped event anything could happen on the day.

When spectating the event, which consists of three 3-balls with one player from each club in each group, it's difficult to judge which of the players are doing well and which are not. You never truly know how players are scoring, although you think you might have an idea.

In the end we are delighted and proud to say that the Burstwick lads won the event by five points, with Hornsea in second place and Scarborough in third. It was a fantastic performance from Jack Maxey (36 points), Lewis Hunt (37 points) and Alfie Tidder (31 points) to make a total of 104!

Hunt picked up the award for the best individual score and the lads were honoured with the title of Junior League Winners 2017. Well done to Lewis, Jack and Alfie, not forgetting Rob Hunt who is our Junior Organiser and works tirelessly with the help of the other parents to keep the team going throughout the season!

It really was a fantastic day for the club at the most picturesque course in the Union!

Maxey & Hunt Pushing Forward in County Matches

After becoming the Burstwick Country Golf 2017 Club Champion last week, Jack Maxey has continued his great form over the last 10 days with some very notable performances.

On Wednesday Jack competed in the Yorkshire Union Under 16s Boys’ Championship at Shipley, and finished a very impressive fourth place, just four shots off the lead after 36 holes. The next day he played in the East Riding Union Boys’ Championship at Hainsworth Park, and after a slightly rocky second round managed to beat the talented Tom Duck in a play-off after 36 holes to win the championship.

Not finished with this fantastic form, Jack earned his first call up to the East Riding Men’s scratch team to play against league leaders Sheffield Union, and Jack was the second highest point scorer for the Union!

Finally, Jack won both his matches in the East Riding Union Junior Matchplay tournament, meaning that he will be in the semi-final on August 27 at Hull Golf Club.

Lewis Hunt, another gifted Junior at the club also had a good week with a third place finish in the ERU Boys' Championship, just two shots off Jack and Tom's finishing score, and Lewis also won both of his ERU Junior Matchplay matches meaning that him and Jack are representing Burstwick as 50% of the semi final field!

Needless to say we are extremely proud of these young men who have been at Burstwick since very young ages, and we will be supporting them all the way!

Burstwick Juniors Compete in East Riding Junior Final at Ganton

Burstwick Junior Captain Lewis Hunt, Jack Maxey and Harry Giles went to Ganton Golf Club on Tuesday to compete in the East Riding Junior League Final after winning the South East Division earlier this summer.

It was the first time Burstwick have reached the junior final and the lads were very excited to represent their club after a great season. The clubs who won the other two divisions were also there, Hessle Golf Club (South West Division winners) and Scarborough North Cliff Golf Club (North East Division winners), each with very talented junior golfers competing for them.

In the end it was Hessle GC who won the final with a fantastic performance, with Scarborough NC finishing second and Burstwick third.

Congratulations to the fantastic Hessle team on a great performance on a very blustery and difficult day. It was a great stepping stone for the Burstwick lads and hopefully we’ll be there again in 2016 to give it another go. Well done lads, onwards and upwards!

Lewis Hunt Finishes Second in Boys Championship at Hornsea

Our very own Lewis Hunt put in a fantastic performance at the East Riding Boys' Championship at Hornsea yesterday, shooting gross scores of 78+76 for an overall 154 score which lead him to second place by count-back over 3 other players including a one handicapper from Hull GC.

It was an excellent day's golfing from the youngster who has seen his handicap to 6.7 and is gunning for a place in the Scratch Matchplay Championship, hoping to beat Alan Key in the Semi Finals.

Well done Lewis!
