Last week we held our annual Ladies Xmas Open Am-Am and Mother Nature blessed us with a more than acceptable day for golf, which remained dry and not too cold. We had a full compliment of teams in the 10:30am shotgun start, and scoring was quite tough on the day with only the top three teams shooting under par scores.

Congratulations to the winning team consisting of our Lady Captain Sarah Leonard, Cathy Greenwood, Chris Wicks and Ann Roberts, with a score of 74 pts, winning on the back nine.

Thank you to all that attended the event, we hope to see you all again next year!

How we doubled our lady membership in three years

As a new club on the scene, we found it difficult in the first few years to build the ladies sector of our membership. What we found was that Ladies’ tend to be very loyal and not move clubs much, and they would rarely move singularly if they ever decided to, it would tend to be in a group.

This meant for a club like Burstwick it was difficult for us to attract many lady golfers, and in 2013 we were at a low in lady membership numbers so we knew something had to change.

Between us we did some brainstorming on how to attract more ladies to the club and we decided that we would need to focus on new golfers rather than trying to attract existing members from elsewhere. So the question was posed: how do you encourage more ladies and girls into golf?

The first move we made was to come up with some beginner female coaching sessions with emphasis on the fun factor, and that there is no snobbery, dress code, or experience required.

As time went by we started seeing some regular girls coming to these sessions, at which point we did our up most to make them feel as welcome as possible. Over a few months we converted quite a few into members at the club, and the section began to slowly grow.

My wife, and 2017 Lady Captain, Laura Key took it upon herself to really begin pushing the ladies section and to become more involved with putting on events for them as well as continuing to encourage others to become part of the group.

Fast forward to now, and our ladies participation has increased more than double and there are frequent events throughout the year that the girls enjoy, from away days, meals out, parties, and of course many golfing events!

One thing we have always prided ourselves on is the friendliness of the club, and that is something that is in abundance of the Burstwick Ladies. If you would like a new hobby, or have tried golf before and want to get back into it again, why not give our Head PGA Professional James Bisby a call on 07896 257878 and come along to one of his beginner sessions on a Wednesday evening?

Pippa Russell wins Lady Captain's Day Trophy!

On Wednesday 17th August Lady Captain Laura Key hosting her Captain's Day, with a round of golf and a meal afterwards, followed by a prize presentation. Unfortunately not all of the lady members could make it due to being at work or on holiday, but with the sun shining the girls set out for an enjoyable day on the golf course, which they most certainly had!

Afterwards the chefs at Cafe Nineteen prepared some delicious chicken salads for everyone, and lady Captain Laura presented her home-made desserts; trifle and cupcakes.

Once the girls were fed and watered Laura went on to present the prizes. In third with a score of nett 81 was Cath Sheppeck, second was Christine Wicks with 81 (back nine 36.5) and the best nett of the day was Ann Roberts with 77. The trophy was presented to the best gross of the day which went to Pippa Russell who scored 98!

Great Day at the Ladies Xmas Open Am-Am

On Monday we then held our annual Ladies’ Xmas Open Am-Am Shootgun in which 16 teams competed. Joanne Young’s team from Hainsworth won by a whopping six shots from the field with a great score of 78, with a hybrid team from Burstwick/Ganstead coming in second place on 72. With a fantastic prize table on offer the top eight teams went away very happy and deservedly so after those great scores in, again, conditions that weren’t easy at all.

Laura Key wins Lady Captain's Day Trophy!

Lady Captain Christine Wicks hosted her Captain's Day on Wednesday 19th August and it was lovely weather for the girls playing golf. All dressed in pink the ladies set off at 10am to compete for the trophy which is awarded for best gross score on the day.

It was a tightly fought day and only one shot separated the top two players, Laura and Gina Key. In the end it was Laura who took the trophy and Gina a gracious second tied with the Captain herself. Well done to all the girls who played, here's to next year!

Gray & Hewitson Clinch Seniors & Ladies Trophy on Countback!

On Wednesday 19th May we held our second annual Seniors and Ladies' Trophy, and the winners from last year Rick Sheppeck and Laura Key were split up in the draw so were unable to defend their trophy as a pair with teams being drawn randomly.

In the end it was a back-nine countback that decided the 2015 winners, with Dave Gray and Sara Hewitson topping the table on 39 pts with a back nine of 20, from Senior Captain  Pete Roberts and Lady Captain Chris Wicks who had a back nine of 17.

Well done to all those who entered, here's looking forward to next year!

Ladies' Afternoon Tea Raises Over £300 for Charity!

On Sunday we held a Ladies Afternoon Tea Party in which around 25 ladies and girls turned up for an afternoon of laughing, eating and drinking! Although the event was called Afternoon Tea, wine may have been more suitable!

The event was open to any females whether golfers of not and our Lady Captain Chris Wicks hosted the event which consisted of lovely home-made sandwiches, scones, cakes a glass of sparkling wine on arrival, and of course a lot of gossip!

Many cakes and buns were baked by guests and friends for a raffle afterwards and over £300 was raised for charity on the day! We would like to thank all those that joined in, baked cakes or donated money to the raffle, it was a brilliant afternoon and we will certainly be doing one again soon.
