Durabunker Project well underway on 18th hole

We have kicked off an exciting project on the 18th hole, where all four bunkers are being rebuilt using the Durabunker system. It’s a big upgrade for one of the course’s most important finishing holes, and the work is already moving along nicely. Everything is on track to be completed in time for the 2026 season.

Durabunker is a modern approach to bunker construction that solves many of the frustrations golfers and greenkeepers face with traditional sand bunkers. Instead of using natural turf revetting, Durabunker uses a layered, synthetic edging material that looks like stacked turf but is far more durable. The layers lock together to form a strong, stable bunker face that resists erosion, contamination, and the collapse that often happens after bad weather or heavy traffic.

Last week Durabunker spent a full week on site working closely with our head greenkeeper, Mark, and the rest of the greenkeeping team. This hands-on training covered every step of the installation process—from preparing the foundations to building the revetted faces and finishing the bunkers to Durabunker’s high standards. The week proved invaluable, giving our team the skills and confidence needed to install and maintain the system long-term. Not only did it ensure the 18th-hole renovation got off to a strong start, but it also equipped the staff with knowledge that will benefit future bunker projects across the course.

The main benefit of Durabunker is that it is a “sealed bunker” system, minimising 99% of soil & clay ingress so that the sand remains pure for years to come, meaning fantastic and consistent playability year-round, and sustained drainage capabilities regardless of the weather.

The second benefit is how long it lasts. While natural revetted bunkers can break down and need rebuilding every few years, Durabunker holds its shape and performance for a long time with far less maintenance.

Once the four bunkers on 18 are finished we can accurately assess costs vs budget and form a plan to progress around the course in the years to come, with a view to completing all bunkers over a long-term durabunker renovation scheme.

For Burstwick, choosing Durabunker is part of our ongoing commitment to improving the course and giving players the best possible experience. Golfers can look forward to enjoying the newly built bunkers this summer, with the project set to be finished well before the season gets into full swing.
