Record numbers for Captain’s Drive-In

Captains Drive In - (left to right) Seniors’ Captain Steve Alger, Men’s Captain Tony Howard, Ladies’ Captain Sarah Leonard, Men’s Vice-Captain Dave Smith

ON Saturday we hosted our Captain’s Drive-In Texas Scramble, after it was re-arranged due to snowfall on 2nd February. For those who don’t know, the Captain’s Drive-In is the official event where the previous Captains hand over to the incoming Captains for the year, and it’s always a great event.

Around 25 spectators gather at the first tee at 7:30am on the morning to watch Our Men’s Captain Tony Howard, Ladies’ Captain Sarah Leonard, Seniors’ Captain Steve Alger and Men’s Vice Captain Dave Smith tee off on for their first official round of golf in their new roles.

Fittingly, the Captains all had walk in music to the tee and I was the MC introducing them, and in true Burstwick fashion obviously tell a few jokes and giving some banter along the way.

Our Professional Matt Daley had his Trackman launch monitor on the first tee so that the Captains could see shot data from what was rather a nerve-racking first tee shot in front of an audience, having just walked on to their chosen song!

The competition, which was a Texas Scramble, attracted record numbers for the club as 109 players entered the event, a fantastic number for a club competition in winter! It was great to see such huge support for the incoming Captains.

Afterwards members enjoyed a nice home-made stew and yorkshire pudding in the clubhouse and Tony was handed his Captain’s blazer, and told the club what his plans were for the year, as well as explaining about his nominated charity: Hull for Heroes.

On behalf of the Captains, a huge thank you goes out to all the support from the members, and here’s to a successful 2019!

Four players emerge victorious at Matchplay Finals

Congratulations to Lee Webster, Mike Oliver and Steve Alger on winning their Matchplay Finals on Saturday 22nd September!

Lee beat George Grassby 10&9 in the 36-hole Scratch Final, Mike beat Alex Foster 5&4 in the Men’s Matchplay and Steve also beat Graham Wilkinson 5&4 in the Seniors’ Final. All very strong victories from each player!

Laura Key also won the Ladies Matchplay two weeks previous, having played Catherine Greenwood early due to Laura being seven months’ pregnant, and the Greensomes final had to be postponed due to Lee Webster also playing in that fixture and it clashing with the Scratch Final.

Congratulations to all the winners and commiserations to the losing finalists, and thank you to all that entered the events! We will see you all competing again in 2019!

Scores reflect great weather at the Seniors' Xmas Invitation

Today we held our 2017 Seniors' Xmas Invitational, and Mother Nature gave us fantastic conditions for the event, showcasing the course in a great light. This competition is an open pair's event which is divided into four age categories: 60-64, 65-69, 70-74 and 75+. With very little wind and quite mild conditions the winning scores in each category where all very worthy, two of the home pairs that came in with 46 points each thought they would have walked away with the top prizes but they were pipped by some cracking scores from away pairings!

Congratulations to all the winners in the 2017 Matchplay Finals Day!

LAST Saturday we hosted the 2017 Matchplay Finals Day, which consisted of five matchplay finals: Scratch, Men’s, Seniors‘, Ladies’ and Greensomes. Unfortunately the Junior final was not able to be played due to Jack Maxey being in both this and the Scratch final.

Tee offs were from 1pm in the afternoon to give members a chance to come and spectate the matches after their morning rounds. All matches are played over 18 holes apart from the Scratch final which was over 36 holes.

The weather was kind and gave us good golfing conditions, with a dry but mild afternoon. First to tee off was the second round of the Scratch Final between past winner Jack Maxey and Steve Sorrenson. Steve Sorrenson was 1 down after the first 18 holes but valiantly battled back to get back to all square, then on the back nine went on a birdie barrage (four in a row) to beat Jack 5&4. What a fantastic way to win the final!

In the Men’s final Andy Giles managed to edge second-time finalist Sam Bamford 2&1 after a very close match between the two players.

Next was the Senior final and Dennis Wright put in an excellent performance to beat the reigning champion Ron Wicks 4&3. In the Ladies’ final Laura Key played very steady golf to become victorious over Sallie Nielsen with a score of 3&2. Laura said she played some of the best golf she has in weeks!

Finally, the Greensomes final went down to the first play-off hole after being all square through 18 where Phil Bullen and Ryan Pettit edged father-son duo Les and Nick Waites.

A huge well done to all the winners who all did themselves very proud on the day, and good luck to both Jack Maxey and Alex Hewitson in the junior final next week!

Captains Emerge as Winners in Seniors & Ladies Betterball

Winners Laura Key and Andy Steward

On a sunny Wednesday in May, 16 of our ladies and 16 of our senior golfers took part in a Mixed Betterball Stableford, for an annual trophy. This is the third year the competition has been played and the popularity has increased each year, which is testament to the hard work put in by the Ladies' and Seniors organisers.

This year the scores were excellent, with six pairs shooting under par scores and the winning team made up of both Captains was a blistering 43 points!

A Great Day Had By All at The Seniors' Christmas Invitation

Yesterday was our Seniors' Christmas Invitation, which consisted of players from clubs all around East Yorkshire and further afield entering a pair's competition which is divided into four age categories: 60-64, 65-69, 70-74 and 75+.

We had around 80 players take part in the day and for the most-part the weather was very kind, apart from one short sharp rain shower in the afternoon which lasted about 10 minutes and caught a few players out. There were some great scores on the day, notably a score of 41 pts from Hornsea pairing G. Hornsey and P. Bridges in the 70-74 group.

Prize winners were as follows:

The Champions Emerge Victorious on Matchplay Finals Day

On Saturday 24th September 2016 the scene was set for the Matchplay Finals Day at Burstwick. Players were to be put through their paces with difficult conditions caused by the a 20 mph wind which we haven't seen a lot of this summer, though thankfully it was dry and warm throughout the afternoon.

There were five matchplay finals to be played on the day: Scratch (no handicap), Men's, Seniors', Ladies' and Juniors'. Ordinarily there would be a sixth final, the Greensomes, but as Sam Bamford had qualified for both the Men's final and the Greensomes' only one could be played on Finals Day. All of the matches were to be played over 18 holes apart from the Scratch which is a 36 hole final.

Tee times began at 1pm (second round for the scratch, first round was played in the morning) and the players headed out for their matches with all intents of being crowned champions. There were some nerves on the first tee but all of the players settled into their rhythm after a couple of holes.

The Scratch Final was to be contested by Jack Maxey and Lee Webster, and things were all square after the morning round as they teed off for hole number 19. Lee got an early lead but Jack made a fantastic birdie from the rough up hole four to bring it back to all square. For the next few holes Lee put the throttle down and was leading four up at the turn. Lee's progress continued as they went on and ended up being six up with six to play, then closing out on the 13th hole with a solid par.

Jack played very well but as matchplay goes, once Lee got a few holes ahead the pressure mounted which lead to Jack having to chase and ultimately coming unstuck. All credit to Lee on a great performance, it was very consistently controlled golf on a tough day!

Onto the Men's Final and it was two young guns headed against each other; Sam Bamford and Gregor Everitt. Both players know each other well and are very capable golfers so this was always going to be a thrilling match.

Sam got an early lead and was two up after six holes, but Gregor fought back straight away to bring it back to all square at the turn. As the players headed into the back nine Gregor pulled off some great golf to edge a lead against Sam, but it was still very nip and tuck for both players as they headed to the 14th tee with just two holes separating them. As they teed off on 16 Sam was up against the wall being two down, and tried to dig in to give himself a fighting chance, but Gregor remained cool to seal victory 3&2.

In the Seniors' Final, Ron Wicks took an early lead against John McNeish, and kept on the cruise control all the way through the match to try and keep John at bay. John did his absolute best to fight back after Ron stretched the lead to 4 through 13 holes, and going down 16 Ron was 3 up with three to play. Ron stayed in control and won the hole to clinch victory 4&2.

The Ladies Final was contested by Chris Wicks and Ann Roberts. Both of the girls are very steely competitors with good matchplay records so this was always going to be a tight match. Ann got out of the blocks early to take a three hole lead through five holes, and she was playing some great golf which meant Chris wasn't given many opportunities to gain some ground back.

Chris showed great patience and determination as she slowly clawed her way back into contention and was just one down after 11 holes. Ann was frugal and would not give the lead up without a fight, and the two players jostled hole after hole, with eventually the match going down to the wire and both players putting on the 18th hole to decide the outcome. Chris came through and managed to two putt to take victory after Ann had had the lead throughout the day, a cruel way to lose but credit to Chris for her determination throughout the match and making it a Wicks one-two in the Ladies' and Seniors' finals!

Finally the Junior Final was to be contested by 13 year old Alfie Tidder and 15 year old Liam Colclough. Both players are great young prospects for the sport and have swings that most of us would give a limb for, so some special golf was to be seen here.

Alfie took an early lead and was playing some very solid golf, he was two up after five holes. As the game went on there was only ever two holes to separate both players, and Liam was hanging in there with Alfie trying his best to keep him at arms length. After 11 holes Alfie had retained his two hole lead, but over the next few holes Liam put in some great golf to get back to all square after 15.

Liam had really gotten into his stride at this point while Alfie was hanging in there, and having to give shots away on 16 and 18 ultimately came to his demise with Liam paring both holes. Alfie needed to hole a 50 foot birdie putt to take the game to extra holes and unfortunately it wasn't to be and the players shook hands. Congratulations to both juniors on a great game and well done to Liam for coming back strong to take the win.

Congratulations to the five champions on their wins in each final, and commiserations to their opponents after such valiant efforts!

Seniors Spring Invitational Results

Despite the drab weather three days beforehand, Mother Nature was for once kind to golfers on Monday 18th April, when we held our Seniors' Spring Invitational Betterball. Organiser of the event, John Dickins, had been working hard to get things ready for the event, and had managed to attract 80 players from all over Yorkshire to come and play at Burstwick.

The competition results were split into four age categories, and despite a fairly stiff wind there were some great scores on the day.

Gray & Hewitson Clinch Seniors & Ladies Trophy on Countback!

On Wednesday 19th May we held our second annual Seniors and Ladies' Trophy, and the winners from last year Rick Sheppeck and Laura Key were split up in the draw so were unable to defend their trophy as a pair with teams being drawn randomly.

In the end it was a back-nine countback that decided the 2015 winners, with Dave Gray and Sara Hewitson topping the table on 39 pts with a back nine of 20, from Senior Captain  Pete Roberts and Lady Captain Chris Wicks who had a back nine of 17.

Well done to all those who entered, here's looking forward to next year!
