Weather didn’t dampen most successful Pro-Am to date

On Friday 25th May we hosted our most high profile event of the year, the annual Pro-Am sponsored by The Audio Room. This event is run by the Yorkshire PGA, and attracts PGA Professionals from all over Yorkshire and further afield.

The day started with pouring rain and a forecast that was changing every half hour, but players remained positive and went out in the bad conditions to battle for the coveted prize pot worth over £6,000.

The first tee was at 10am and the rain stopped around 12pm, so the first 12 teams or so had to handle the rain in some shape or form, but the remaining 19 teams were lucky enough to stay dry throughout the afternoon.

In the end the top four teams and professional scores came from afternoon tee slots with the two winning professionals Matt Daley and Rob Calderbank shooting 67 in the afternoon. Home professional James Bisby put in a great score of 68 to finish tied third, which made many of the Burstwick members very happy.

The winning team consisted of James Bisby (pro), myself, Mark Webb and James Thompson, and with a score of -19 pipped another team of Burstwick members by one shot. I was personally delighted with the win, firstly because the first prize was fantastic but also because we (the same four players) placed very poorly in 2017, so we righted a few wrongs out there!

Thank you to all of the 124 players who attended, and also the volunteers who helped before and on the day:

Sarah Leonard & Kate Miskin (halfway house), Alex Foster, Darren Marks, Steve Alger, Craig Dodson, Mark Webb, and many more. We couldn’t have done it without you all!

Also a huge thank you to all of our sponsors who helped us achieve what we did at the event:

Driving Range Tips from The Pro

Technical Practice vs Target Practice

Technical Practice

If you have been for a lesson with myself or a fellow PGA Professional, this would involve doing drills you may have been given or hitting balls with a visual aid, whether it be for strike, club path, or club face alignment for example. Or just a feeling of what you are trying to accomplish to improve your golf.

During this phase of practise you are solely focusing on the movement you are trying to make. However I would pick out some sort of target as a reference.

Target Practice

  • This is where I would like you to forget all your technical thoughts, and pick out specific targets on the range.
  • Use different clubs to different targets. Pick out a fairway, or a green, then go through your routine and hit the shot. Now you are practising how you play, rather than just beating balls with no real target.
  • If a tee shot doesn’t suit your eye, (our 16th for example), pick a line on the range as the O.O.B. then a fairway to the left and practise that tee shot.
  • Play a hole, pick out a fairway and hit driver, then pick another target as your green and hit 6 iron for example. You very rarely hit the same two clubs in a row on the golf course.

Golf is a target orientated game, so start practising hitting shots to targets and I’m sure it will help your game when your out on the golf course.

Putting Clinic with James Bisby, Tuesday 5th April 6:30-7:30pm

Struggling with your putting? Let’s face it we’ve all had a hard time with the short stick at some point. How many times have you ‘done the hard work’ and hit two or three great shots into a green, only to three (or even four!) putt, walking away in disgust?

It costs just a fiver, call James on 07896 257878 to book!

Putting is not easy. It’s a part of the game which can really get into your head, and trap you in a vault of uncertainty and doubt. Whether it’s pace, direction, reading the green, or just striking the ball consistently out of the middle of the face, putting is a very delicate, yet rewarding affair.

Never fear, our Head PGA Professional James Bisby is here to help! James is hosting a Putting Clinic on the evening of Tuesday, April 5, between 6.30-7.30pm. Come and get some fantastic tips and pointers which will guarantee to shave shots off your round!
