The Presentation Night was a Blast!

On Saturday 12th March we hosted our annual presentation evening and we saw 120 tickets sell out for the third year in a row.

With the clubhouse full to brimming, members and guests enjoyed a fantastic night. I talked on the microphone about how far the club has come and what the future holds, then outgoing Men’s Captain Andy Wilson thanked the members for their great support for his year before handing over to this year’s Captain Alan Mackinnon who talked about his hopes for the year.

Then the prize presentation took place with notable winners Lewis Hunt and Laura Key taking more than five awards each!

After the presentation guests enjoyed a freshly prepared hot buffet by our chefs and the DJ turned the music up for everyone to dance the night away. It was another outstanding social event at the club and here’s looking forward to the next one!

Guests Were Very Merry at Wine Tasting Evening!

On Saturday 12th September we hosted a Wine Tasting Evening with our wine suppliers, Matthew Clarks. The wine tasting was a little different to what you might expect, it's more of a quiz, which we call 'Call My Bluff'.

Guests were split into teams and had to guess who was telling the truth about each wine they were tasting, out of the two wine connoisseurs Dave and Pete. It was a great night with lots of laughs and by the end of the evening our guests were very merry!

First Junior Captain's Day is a Massive Success!

Today we hosted our first ever Junior Captain's Day at Burstwick and it turned out to be a fantastic day for the next generation of golfers at Burstwick. Captain Lewis Hunt hosted a 27 hole event with a 9 hole Texas Scramble in the morning followed by lunch and an 18 hole Individual Stableford in the afternoon.

Lewis continued his fine form of late with his best ever round, shooting a one-under-par 69 gross to win the competition by three points, ahead of Harry Giles and Tom Ward on 40 points.

Well done to all the juniors that played and made it such a great day, let's make it even better next year!

Entering Competitions Singularly

After the latest committee meeting is was discussed about members entering competitions while playing with another member who is not in the competition.

Up until now it has been a club rule that to enter a competition you must play with a player that is also in the competition or another competition on the same day, but it has now been decided that this will no longer be the case in the future. Players will be permitted to enter the competitions and any member, whether in the competition or not, will be allowed to mark their card.

Europe Take Back Burstwick Cup in a Tense Finish!

Mother Nature was very kind to the golfers at Burstwick over the weekend, after what looked like a bleak outlook for the Burstwick Cup, turned out to be absolutely fine, if not rather nice!

The rivalry between the European and USA team for the 2015 Burstwick Cup was one of the most fierce we have seen, and the banter began well before a ball was teed up, with Facebook and Twitter awash with jibes and jokes about who might come out victorious.

Team captain's Andy Wilson and Alan Mackinnon were raring to go on Saturday, and their intentions were made obvious with chants and barracking on the first tee, with the teams joining in the camaraderie!

Conditions were a little blowy on the Saturday but fortunate the rain had been and gone during the night, and although it was a cool start the weather warmed up nicely in from mid-morning onwards.

The scores at the end of the first day fourballs were 4.5 to 3.5 in favour of Europe, with it all to play for in the final day singles matches.

Sunday morning arrived and the weather was absolutely stunning; a still and warm summers morning meant that the course was going to be very scoreable and play for some great golf in the singles.

The team captains went out first again and the 15 matches followed in succession, with some tense pairings with scores that wanted settling. Notable matches included the Robbins brothers against each other, ex-captains Dave Harris versus Martin Oliver, and Alan Key matched up against Ashley Heidstra.

With some very close matches including four halves the Burstwick Cup really could have gone either way, and with just 3 matches to come in the scores were 11.5-9.5 to the USA (with 12.5 needed to claim victory).

In the end it was Shaun McGeachy delivered the final blow by beating Dave Smith 3&1, despite the final two matches going the way of the Europeans. The end result was a nail-biting 12.5-11.5 to the USA, a fantastic end to a great weekend!

Presentation Night Packed Out Again!

On Saturday evening we hosted our Presentation Evening for the 2014-15 season and it was (as always) an absolutely fantastic night. Nearly a hundred members and guests turned up to celebrate the winners of trophies, medals, salvers, shields and more.

Congratulations to all the winners who collected their awards on the evening.

After the prize presentation guests enjoyed a lovely hot buffet presented by the Cafe Nineteen chefs, and a few drinks to celebrate.

One person who enjoyed the event very much was our very own Laura Key who was presented with her first ever trophy and proceeded to have it filled with a mixture of spirits at the bar, for everyone to enjoy! Safe to say there were a few sore heads the next morning!

Thank you to everyone who came and supported the event and we'll see you again next year!
