Record numbers for Captain’s Drive-In

ON Saturday we hosted our Captain’s Drive-In Texas Scramble, after it was re-arranged due to snowfall on 2nd February. For those who don’t know, the Captain’s Drive-In is the official event where the previous Captains hand over to the incoming Captains for the year, and it’s always a great event.

Around 25 spectators gather at the first tee at 7:30am on the morning to watch Our Men’s Captain Tony Howard, Ladies’ Captain Sarah Leonard, Seniors’ Captain Steve Alger and Men’s Vice Captain Dave Smith tee off on for their first official round of golf in their new roles.

Fittingly, the Captains all had walk in music to the tee and I was the MC introducing them, and in true Burstwick fashion obviously tell a few jokes and giving some banter along the way.

Our Professional Matt Daley had his Trackman launch monitor on the first tee so that the Captains could see shot data from what was rather a nerve-racking first tee shot in front of an audience, having just walked on to their chosen song!

The competition, which was a Texas Scramble, attracted record numbers for the club as 109 players entered the event, a fantastic number for a club competition in winter! It was great to see such huge support for the incoming Captains.

Afterwards members enjoyed a nice home-made stew and yorkshire pudding in the clubhouse and Tony was handed his Captain’s blazer, and told the club what his plans were for the year, as well as explaining about his nominated charity: Hull for Heroes.

On behalf of the Captains, a huge thank you goes out to all the support from the members, and here’s to a successful 2019!

The Captains get Fantastic Support for their Drive In!

On behalf of the Men's, Ladies', Seniors' and Juniors' Captains the club would like to thank the plethora of members who supported the Captains' Drive In on Saturday, it was an event that was full to the brim!

Not only did the Captains have a great Drive In but they managed to have a storming round and win the Texas Scramble as well! An unbelievable score of 52.8 was enough to win the scramble by 1.2 shots from second place, out of 17 teams altogether who played.

Well done to the four captains and thanks again for all of the members’ support on the day!

Fantastic Turn Out for Captain's Drive In Despite Damp Weather

On Saturday we hosted our 2016 Captains' Drive In, where we welcomed in the new Captains for the year and said good bye to 2015's. Early on Saturday morning the rain came down and it came down hard, so much so that there was a point when the Drive In was nearly called off!

But the hardy members at Burstwick arrived at the club to support the Captains while they teed off at 8am, and then continued to enter the Texas Scramble throughout the morning. It was a testament to members' when 17 out of 19 teams played in such horrid conditions, because when the rain stopped at 1pm the wind followed with a vengeance!

After the competition the Captains laid on home-made beef stew for the players, cooked freshly by our chefs at Café Nineteen - just what the doctor ordered!

Once all the members were back in outgoing Men's Captain Andy Wilson thanked the members for a great year and introduced his replacement Alan Mackinnon, who explained what his intentions were for raising money for his nominated charity, Cash for Kids.

Alan Key finished off by thanking all of the 2015 Captains and members for their support, and finished by wishing the four 2016 Captains Alan Mackinnon, Laura Key, Peter Roberts (Seniors) and Harry Giles (Juniors) the very best for the coming year.
