A letter from the incoming 2022 Captain

Hello members of Burstwick,

From 5th February this year it will be my privilege and honour to the represent Burstwick Golf Club as your Captain for the 2022/2023 season. I am very much looking forward to the year ahead to promote this ever-improving golf club.

I have been a member of the club since 2010 and have enjoyed seeing the results of a lot of hard work by the greenkeepers over that time led by David Key who works tirelessly with his staff to constantly improve the course, and I think despite the recent wet spell the course continues to deliver a good test of our golf skills.

The investment made by the club on the two professionals’ studios and now the new installation of the Top Tracer driving range facility is really moving the club towards one of the best golf facilities in the East Riding.

I would like to say a big thankyou to our outgoing captain Stephen Alger, who like Dave Smith the 2020 captain had to deal with some of the most difficult circumstances during their years of captaincy due to the ongoing pandemic.  Especially (and totally understandably) the reluctance of many golfers, their families and friends to attend functions because of this.  Subsequently this led to the cancellation of many events but well done Steve you did a great job.

Whilst performing the role of Vice Captain alongside Steve during 2021 I have thoroughly enjoyed attending the captain’s invitation events held at most of the 16 affiliated clubs in the East Riding, and  look forward to representing the club at the 2022 captain’s invitation days.

During my captaincy year I will be supported by our new Vice Captain, John Ward who I look forward to sharing some time with at the captain’s invitational events. I wish John all the best for the next two years of his golf career as vice and then captain of the club.

The pandemic did cause the cancellation of the 2021 Burstwick Cup in August, between captain Stephen Alger’s Europe team and my vice captain’s Team USA. However, I’m pleased to say that the event did take place in October, and it was once again the best competition weekend of the year, especially as my team USA beat the captain’s team Europe. It was a thoroughly enjoyable two days of golf and great banter, and I would ask all members to look out for the Burstwick Cup events and get involved if you can. The event is usually held during July or August.

As Captain of Burstwick Golf Club my chosen Charity is Postrate Cancer UK, ref no 1773755. This is a charity which will help a lot of us as we move on in years to raise the awareness of this condition which sadly has affected quite a number of my friends and colleagues. Please support my charity if you can during the year.

With this in mind the Captain’s Charity Am Am will be played on Saturday 30th July 2022. It will be a good day with a halfway house and good golf so please enter a team if you are able to support this important charity event.

Covid permitting I am also planning on organising a weekend away golf break during the summer and hope that you will be able to join me.  Watch the notice board for more details.

It just leaves me to say have a great year at the golf club, take care of the course by replacing your divots and pitch marks and let’s all enjoy watching the course improve whilst we are out there playing golf.

I look forward to meeting many members during the year, and enjoying a round of golf with as many as possible, Happy Golfing, take care

Regards

Nigel Colley
