The Yorkshire Team Championships are gross events that are played every year, with seven divisions and a preliminary qualifier, and clubs can compete to get up to the 1st division each year to contend for the Ilkley Bowl, which is the prize for the best club in Yorkshire for that year.

These championships are gross aggregate strokeplay events, meaning pressure is on each player to do their best for the team - a bad round for the player means a tough time for the team.

In each division there are 18 clubs competing and the rules are that the top six qualify for the next division up, the middle six stay in the same division for the next year, and the bottom six go down a division for the next year.

Burstwick have never got higher than the 7th division, and this year had to requalify for this tournament in the preliminary round. In the qualifier, which was played at Forest of Galtres, a team of Lee Webster, Steve Sorrenson and Rob Draper played some great golf to qualify in 9th place, which meant the club went through to the 7th division Championship at Wakefield two weeks later.

Due to work commitments both Rob and Steve were unable to make the next round, so Jamie Gill and Alan Key stepped in to team up with Lee for this event. The target was to try and finish in the top 12 to at least stay in the division for next year so that we didn’t need to qualify, but thanks to some solid golf on a tight golf course, Burstwick made it through in 6th place, just beating 7th and 8th place on countback!

Jamie Gill played some great golf in what was his first appearance in a scratch event for the club, shooting a brilliant round of 78 (+6) to lead the team through to the 6th Division on 5th May.

Well done to the team, it’s the first time the club has ever gotten past the 7th division, fingers cross the lads can put in another strong performance at Leeds Golf Club to take the club even further!
