Europe Triumphs in the Burstwick Cup After Dramatic Weekend Battle

The 2025 edition of the Burstwick Cup, a two-day Ryder Cup style competition between Europe and the USA, delivered all the drama, camaraderie, and high-quality (or not in some cases!) golf that members have come to expect from this much-loved event.

Captained by Lee Sargeson, the European team went head-to-head with the USA, led by Martin Gill, in a format designed to replicate the intensity of the famous Ryder Cup. Saturday’s play featured fourball matchplay, and from the very first tee shot it was clear that neither side was prepared to give an inch. Matches were fiercely contested, with momentum swinging back and forth throughout the day.

For the first time ever we ran the Burstwick Cup with a live leaderboard through our Golf Genius software - this added a new dimension to the matches as the Captains and players alike could keep an eye on how their teams were performing, adding to the pressure on their own shoulders!

By the time the final putt dropped on Saturday evening, nothing could separate the two teams. With the scores level at 4.5 points each, anticipation for Sunday’s singles was sky high. The players knew that the smallest of margins could decide the trophy’s destination.

Sunday morning began with a statement of intent from the Americans. Captain Martin Gill led by example, securing the opening point and momentarily tilting the balance in his team’s favour. It was a symbolic win that gave the USA camp a surge of belief. However, from that point on, Europe proved unstoppable. Inspired by captain Sargeson’s leadership and passion, the European players delivered a series of confident and clinical performances.

One by one, matches turned blue on the leaderboard, and by the afternoon session it became clear that Europe were on course for a decisive victory. What had started as a tense and finely balanced contest on Saturday ended in a commanding European triumph on Sunday, securing the Burstwick Cup in style.

Yet beyond the competitive spirit and hard-fought matches, the weekend embodied the values that make the Burstwick Cup so special. Sportsmanship, camaraderie, and friendship ran through every part of the event. Once the final putts were holed, players and supporters came together for a two-course meal, followed by the medal presentation, where both captains paid tribute to their teams and to the spirit of the competition.

The 2025 Burstwick Cup will be remembered as a weekend of quality golf, passionate rivalry, and good memories!
