The Burstwick CupThe Burstwick Cup

Last weekend we hosted our coveted Burstwick Cup which is a Ryder Cup style event where members of Burstwick are split into Team Europe and Team USA for a 16v16 brawl!

Captains Bruce Carter (Europe) and Tony Howard (USA) both had great teams on paper, and it was obvious the weekend could go either way.

With fourball betterball matches played on the Saturday the scores came in at 5-3 to the Americans, but with double points available on the Sunday in the singles matches it was obvious that slender lead could quite easily fade away very quickly. And it did.

The first three matches on Sunday went to the Europeans, and suddenly with 13 points to play for the Americans started to wobble.

Myself and opponent Chris Young (who beat me 3&2 in the second match of the day) took it upon ourselves to grab a golf buggy and promote ourselves to theoretical vice captains, as we went around the course to see how the other matches were playing, and give our teams some encouragement.

The more Chris and I ventured around the course it was evident that this cup was going to be nip and tuck. Both the Europeans and Americans had a fair share of matches going their way, and with a lot of strong characters out on the course it was tough to call who might falter and who would strive to victory in each game.

In the end, the final few matches edged it towards Team USA and the race to 12.5 points was won with a couple of matches still left to come in. Congratulations to the red team on their brilliant victory, and thank you to all that played the weekend. I’m sure we will see many of you again in the Burstwick Cup next year!
